Wine Wednesday is where we discuss wines we’ve recently enjoyed, or not enjoyed, as the case may be. Because we are not wine experts, these “reviews” will be written in the typical B.S. style. We don’t take ourselves, or our wine, too seriously but hope you’ll enjoy our perspectives and maybe find a new bottle of wine to enjoy.
Hey guys! I’m writing this from sunny Las Vegas. I haven’t had much time to explore yet due to work, but did have a delicious sushi dinner last night. Since I’m in Sin City, I simply couldn’t pass up the opportunity to write another Wine Wednesday post celebrating my favorite vice. If you’re tired of me talking about nothing but rosé, stick around because this week there’s not a pink wine in sight.
Clos Lojen 2016 Bobal
If you’re looking for a red wine you can drink like a white wine, this is it. This young Bobal is explosively fruit-forward with minimal tannins and tons of flavor. I hadn’t ever heard of Bobal before, but a wine tasting at Cleveland Park Wine & Spirits had me hooked. Commonly used to make bulk red blends, this grape has only recently become popular with wine enthusiasts. This iteration is a juicy, easy-drinking red that tastes great chilled. It would make the perfect picnic wine as an accompaniment to your white or rosé selection.
B.S. Bottom Line: This 2016 Clos Lojen is affordable and very versatile with food. If you love red, but the heat makes a bold, tannic wine sound unappealing, this should be your new go-to.
Medlock Ames 2014 Heritage Merlot
We try to save our Medlock Ames bottles for special occasions. So obviously we would break one out for the premiere of Game of Thrones. Does it get more special than that? We also really love Twin Peaks, and both shows are definitely stressful enough to warrant a solid libation. Medlock Ames aptly describes this Merlot as an “iron fist in a velvet glove” due to its powerful structure and smooth, lingering finish. I think Tyrion would approve.
B.S. Bottom Line: I can’t sing the Medlock Ames’ praises enough. Each wine we open is complex and delicious.
Vera 2016 Vinho Verde
If you’re tired of rosé but still want something light, crisp and refreshing Vinho Verde is a sure bet. Vinho Verdes are young, slightly effervescent wines that usually have a lower alcohol content. This Vera 2016 Vinho Verde is made by one of Portugal’s renowned winemakers, Luis Duarte. Not surprisingly, coming from such pedigree, this wine is a little more complex than most Vinho Verdes you’ll find at the grocery store. Luckily, the price is still right ($10) for a beautifully expressive white with notes of caramel and banana on the nose and a lovely, crisp finish.
B.S. Bottom Line: Forget rosé, grab a case of this affordable Vinho Verde and you’re set for the rest of summer.
