I’m not going to lie, there has been minimal winning going on wellness wise lately. I haven’t been doing terribly, but I also haven’t been doing great. But the point of this series is to focus on the positive, so try I shall.
It all started with a trip to Oklahoma last week, which also threw off my posting schedule, so this is kind of a two weeks in one double whammy.
[Ashton, traveling like the pro that he is.]
Healthy travel is not one of my strong suits. I’m so impressed by those who stay on a clean diet while on vacation, but I tend to have a FOMO/YOLO/WTF mentality when it comes to eating while traveling.
But actually, all things considered, this visit went fairly well. Trips home to see the family are never a super healthy affair, but this one was far less decadent than the majority have been. So… we’ll call that Win #1. Most of the time was simply spent enjoying the people I love, after being way too far away for far too long.
[Boomer Sooner]
We got to go to the OU game on Saturday with my dad and brother and watch a slightly wobbly win at my alma mater. My family and some of our friends have had the same season tickets since I was in middle school, so it’s always comforting to go back and see familiar faces and cheer on my Sooners.
Things like that – family, friends and football – are healthy for the mind and soul, which I’m going to designate Win #2.
Of course, there were indulgences.
[Because when your name is on a cookie cake, you have a small piece. Or two.]
By Monday, everyone was back to work while we still had half a day to explore, so we went on a short walk first around my brother and sister-in-law’s neighborhood then at Lake Hefner, one of Oklahoma City’s best spots for walking and running.
[If you didn’t know Oklahoma could be this pretty, now you do.]
The weekend had been stormy and rainy off and on, but Monday was gorgeous and a great way to end our trip. I even had a salad after our walks, which all together definitely make up Win #3.
[Yes, the salad had cheese and was topped with ranch dressing, but it had lots of protein too, so don’t kill my vibe – we’re calling it healthy.]
When we got back, I did my best to get back into semi-healthy mode. I’ve still been very motivated by Barre3 Online, doing a workout of some sort at least four times a week. I love the variety of the workouts and that I can switch up the length as needed, depending on my time and energy levels.
On a progress note, back in Brazil I was a little bummed to discover I had obtained a bit of a flappy arm waggle. Just a month or so of semi-regular barre practice and the wiggle waggle is no more. Win #4?
I do want to incorporate more heart-pounding cardio into the routine, and some heavier lifting workouts but the ease of barre usually wins out.
I’d love to sign back up for a gym membership for spin and Zumba classes, but I’m going to continue to hold out for now and just make a concerted effort to switch up the workouts a bit more this week.
That, and focus on healthier meals and better portion control, which has definitely been my downfall lately. (The Landmark Music Festival indeed delivered food wise, and much deliciousness was consumed this weekend. I did have scallops one night instead of pizza at dinner, but I won’t call it a win since there was most definitely cheesecake afterwards. More on that another day.)
WHAT WERE YOUR WELLNESS WINS THIS WEEK? KEEP ME MOTIVATED!
Wow, lighthouses in OK? Had no idea! How beautiful! I know – traveling is so hard when trying to eat healthier, but sounds like you did well!
Oklahoma has a lot of nice surprises. It’s not really a destination people make a point of traveling to, but if you find yourself there for some reason there are lots of fun things to discover.
Really nice post! Thanks and keep your good working!
Cookies and icing are like my two favorite things, so yes cookie cakes MUST be eaten!!! We need to get back MO so I can go to a Mizzou game!
Ah, I used to be very familiar with Mizzou when they were still in the Big XII. It’s always fun to go back to a game!
That SALAD. Looks DELISH. And by the way… gig em aggies!
My cousin went to A&M and my brother went to grad school there, so despite my Big XII loyalties, I can’t say too many things about the aggies 😉
It’s ok my wellness has fallen off the waysaide as well (my waist shows it :/ eek) anyways, keep up the positive thinking! Ashton looks so adorable (and well behaved!)
Thanks Natalie, I can obviously relate! And he is super well behaved, though I can’t take much credit for it since we adopted him when he was already a senior.
So many great wins! And I’m not a healthy traveler either. I hate to miss out on things that I don’t get regularly.
And so excited to hear that you’ve seen some progress with Barre3. I’m still going strong as well!
Exactly, although with as often as I go home to Oklahoma I’m not sure that applies anymore, haha. We’re just a family that likes to eat, and it’s too fun to worry about much else 🙂
Sounds like a not-too-bad week, really! That cookie looks worth a little guilt afterward.
I feel like eating healthy has come a lot easier to me since I transitioned to a vegan diet. I am eating pretty high carb, but I feel like my body is responding well to it, and I’ve got lots more energy.
Lately, I have been getting more into rock climbing and yoga. They are the types of activities that make you feel like you want to be in good shape so you can get better and be able to make more moves/do harder poses. That’s a great form of motivation, aside from overall health. Of course, I also love bicycling and running, but I don’t do them regularly while traveling.
Sounds like you are doing well with being healthy! It’s nice to read posts like this—reminds me to pay more attention to my health as well 🙂
I wish I did more yoga, I used to be very into it but the cost in DC is astronomical and I have a hard time practicing on my own. Maybe that’s something I should work on as well. Rock climbing sounds like an amazing workout – and adrenaline rush!
I totally understand. It’s crazy to see how expensive a drop-in class can be.
Once in a while, I’ll buy a pass to somewhere new on Groupon or spend the money to go to a few classes and that motivates me to practice on my own, along with teaching me how to practice on my own. I try with Youtube sometimes, but I feel like I need the interaction and the correction once in a while.
The Groupons and new member discounts really do help! I need to look into that more, as winter is coming and my stress levels often rocket with the falling temps. Thanks for staying in touch Marie!
Oh man, airports are my kryptonite when it comes to healthy living. It’s like when I’m walking around the terminal, every single healthy habit i have just flies away. Huge latte + every baked good in the world? Yes please. Don’t forget something for the plane!
I’m the same way! I know a lot of people dread airport food, but I love exploring to see what goodies I can find 🙂
Healthy Eating is so difficult to do when you are travelling.
Even my best laid out eating plans fly out the window when I’m travelling. There are just so many new, amazing and not so healthy dishes to try!
I agree, I just hate missing out on the chance to try something new/delicious!
