When we went to the Frederick area earlier this year, we fell in love with Springfield Manor, the beautiful grounds and the charming historic inn. So when we were given the opportunity to return and stay in at the guest house, we jumped on it.
A Weekend Away at The Inn at Springfield Manor
We returned on a gorgeous August weekend for a fun and relaxing getaway. We stayed in one of the rooms I felt most drawn to on our tour back in April – the Edgar room. This large third-floor suite is named after Edgar Allan Poe, who reportedly spent his honeymoon night at Springfield Manor and carved his name in a glass windowpane with the diamond wedding ring. How cool is that?
Springfield Manor does a great job of honoring the beautiful historic details of the building while still offering the necessary modern comforts. I loved all the little touches in the decor and the stunning view of the property. The bed was luxurious and comfortable and the bathroom was gorgeous and modern. I couldn’t have asked for more.
A stay at Springfield Manor includes a complimentary wine or spirits tasting next door, so after checking out our digs we headed back downstairs for a drink.
Since we’d gone heavy on the spirits during our last visit, we opted for a wine tasting before enjoying a glass outside on the patio. We listened to live music, made friends with a passing lizard and just relished the beautiful afternoon.
In addition a free tasting, a stay at Springfield includes a nice two-course farm fresh breakfast downstairs.
Like everything else, the space was super cute and welcoming. We were treated to a Greek yogurt parfait followed by a mini egg soufflé and local sausage. The menu rotates based on what is in season, but expect something hearty and nutritious.
Service was wonderful from start to finish at the inn. Being on the third floor, we also didn’t notice any noise at night despite all the rooms being rented. My only minor complain was that the air conditioner is regulated by floor, and the people staying in the other rooms kept setting it to 60 degrees (sometimes lower!). Other than that, we were completely charmed by our stay and would absolutely return over and over again.
A Hike to Cunningham Falls State Park
Overall, Springfield Manor served as the perfect base for a weekend getaway. While we could easily have kept ourselves entertained on the grounds the entire time, we had to get out and do a bit of exploring. There is plenty to get up to nearby, especially for nature lovers. Our first stop was to nearby Cunningham Falls State Park.
Located in the Catoctin Mountains, Cunningham Falls is a picturesque park featuring campgrounds a swimming beach, hiking and waterfalls. We didn’t have a lot of time to spend in the area, so we headed straight to the falls. The weather was just about as perfect as it gets, so the trails and the falls were both pretty crowded. It was still a fun, quick and easy hike. I’d love to return someday to explore more of the trails.
We paid a small fee to enter the park (I think $5 per person) and noticed plenty of parking and facilities if you plan to spend a day there.
A Frolic Through the Flowers at Catoctin Mountain Orchard
My friend Tara recommended we visit Catoctin Mountain Orchard, and I’m so glad she did. This place is the stuff of dreams with a huge farm market, pick-your-own fruit and flowers and views for days.
After wandering through the flowers and orchards and playing in the hay we hit up the indoor farm market. There are so many goodies available from fresh fruits and vegetables, jams and gifts and fresh-baked goods. I wanted to buy everything, but left with some beautiful peaches and tomatoes. I definitely hope we can head back to pick some apples in the Fall.
Other Things To Do in the Area
Springfield Manor is located in Thurmont, Maryland and a short drive from Frederick. We spent ample time there as well – an epic lunch at Black Hog BBQ, a fun dinner with friends at White Rabbit Gastropub and a celebratory brunch at Volt. Frederick is such a lovely and walkable town. More than anything we just enjoyed wandering around in the sunshine. The Frederick area also boasts tons of great distilleries and breweries, although we didn’t make it to any on this trip. No matter what you’re looking to do, Springfield Manor is a wonderful base for a getaway to the Frederick area.
We were provided a complimentary stay at The Inn at Springfield Manor. As always, all opinions are completely honest and 100% our own.
You definitely have to return in the Fall! I would love to see what kind of “Halloween/Thanksgiving” themed activities you will come across around that time of the year!
