I’ve been obsessed with the outdoors lately. The sun has been fairly consistent and the temperatures mild and our evening walks have finally returned. I couldn’t be happier about it. This time of year I welcome all of my favorite things back into my life: hiking, grilling, long walks, al fresco drinks and of course, warm weather treats. Dolci Gelati has been serving up some of my favorite gelato in DC for years, and they’ve got even more goodness in store for Spring.
Two weekends ago we stopped by for a Sundae Funday at their bright and airy storefront in Shaw for a taste of their new and exciting menu items.
Dolci Gelati recently acquired their liquor license, which means in addition to your usual scoop of peanut butter chocolate swirl gelato, you can get a buzz while simultaneously getting your sugar fix.
We sampled the delicious peach and mango Bellinis as well as a beer shake made with Three Stars Citra Lemon.
Both creations were delicious, but I gravitated a bit more towards the beer shakes. They were a little less sweet and I loved the way the citrus flavor added a touch of tartness to the drink. And this is only the beginning, Dolci Gelati has big plans in store for future boozy creations as well.
But it doesn’t stop with libations and gelato, Dolci Gelato has a great selection of pastries to sate your hunger as well.
Neopolitan pastiera, Napoleon cake, cannolis and more will make your sweet tooth happy, and if you’re craving something savory they offer pizzetas as well with mozzarella cheese and basil.
While we munched on salted caramel mini gelato pops, Ashton was able to get in on the fun too!
Dolci Gelati has your pup covered too with dog gelato made with peanut butter, sweet potato, banana and agave.
Our little guy was a little confused at first – “A whole ice cream just for me?!” – but quickly got on board and lapped it up. Is there anything cuter than a dog eating gelato?
One of the highlights of the day was listening to owners Anastasia Dellaccio and pastry chef Gianluigi Dellaccio discuss their “passione” for good gelato and the road that led them to opening a business in DC. They are committed to using quality ingredients and making a product that is completely authentic, starting with their vintage gelato maker dating all the way back to 1923.
We were able to taste a fresh batch of stracietella (chocolate chip) gelato right as it came out of the machine. So good!
So get out there and take a long walk, and then reward yourself with a scoop of gelato, or a beer shake, or some tiramisu. The possibilities are pretty much endless at Dolci Gelati.
Find them at these locations and keep an eye out for the Dolci Gelati Truck around town as well. Salute!
Good gelato places are true treasures! We have one near us that has the most delicious and creamy ever. To be honest, it’s better than the majority of the ones we tried in Italy. 🙂
