Remembering January

Washington DCPosted by Kacy

1 Feb

My my January, you were a saucy one. It was nearly non-stop excitement in Bad Sentences land the past 31 days, and February isn’t looking to slow down any either.
As fast as the month seemed to pass by, New Year’s Day seems like ages ago. It was a relaxing start to the year with no resolutioning involved, as you can see below.

Tortilla Cafe breakfast burrito

Massive breakfast burrito at Tortilla Coast

We walked to brunch at Tortilla Coast (a great brunch deal for those in the area) and then watched Tom’s Ohio State Buckeyes win their bowl game against Notre Dame.
The next day, we worked our only shift at the winery for the month. Ashton slacked off a bit and spent the majority of the day in his bed while Tom and I worked. Good thing he’s cute.
Ashton at the wineryOn our final day before the holidays were really and truly over, we went to Ryan and Jen’s house to watch the Jets versus the Bills in the playoffs. They made us delicious food and we had a nice time watching the game, even though the Jets lost.
Then it was back to work and a busy week that was relatively uneventful on the fun spectrum, anyway. The weekend solved that, though, with an epic wine dinner at Maggie Malick Wine Caves.
employee wine dinnerThese dinners are one of the major perks of working at the winery. This one was in honor of all the employees, so it was extra special. Chef Chuck Cardamon, of Cardamon Family Vineyards, manned the kitchen turning out all sorts of delicious dishes that were paired with select Maggie Malick wines.

Everything was excellent, and made even better by the fact that I had some excellent dining companions.

Behind Ashton is Harley the cat. They’re about the same size.

We had a great time at the dinner. The winery staff expanded a lot while we were in Brazil and it was nice to get to know some of the folks who were hired while we were gone. Maggie’s operation is really taking off and I’m so happy for them.
The next day we had a rare spell of mild weather, and took to the streets to walk off some of our sluggishness from the previous night.
walk in Capitol HillIt’s amazing what one warm-ish day can do for a winter hating soul like mine. We walked for nearly an hour, drooling over all the beautiful Capitol Hill row houses as usual.
The next week was another busy one, with a fun dinner at Rose’s Luxury and then our trip to Fredericksburg for the weekend.
I worked from home even more than usual in January due to a minor illness, holidays and the snow. One day when I did manage to make it in I found this lively scene waiting for me.
birthday cubeI work with an awesome group of people who like to keep things fresh, especially if that means reminding me of my age.
thirty happensThese red velvet birthday cupcakes took the edge off having everyone tell me how much it sucks getting old.
work birthdayBirthday girls wear the pink sash for their office celebrations, no exception. I was told my Tiffany tiara was back on back order, but should arrive soon.
But really, I had a lovely birthday and enjoyed hearing from friends and family near and far on the big day.
As soon as the birthday was in the bag, it was time to start panicking about Winter Storm Jonas.
dog snugglesWe took advantage of the weather and spent a lot of time indoors snuggling, and working from home.
working from homeBirthdays remained a theme throughout the end of the month. This past Friday, Tom and I decided to invite a bunch of our friends out for a very belated joint birthday celebration. We had a nice time catching up with friends we hadn’t seen since before the holidays. It can be tough to stay social in the dead of winter, but it’s so worth it to make the effort.
Saturday, another Kish had a birthday that needed to be properly celebrated.
Ashton bdayAshton turned 11 and although he had no idea what was going on I had an excellent time watching him try to figure out his birthday treat.
birthday treatIt was a little too hard for his old man teeth, so we gave him half a scrambled egg (his favorite) instead. He’s an easy dog to please.
Yesterday, I wrapped up an amazing month with an epic girl’s day that started with tea at Lady Camellia in Georgetown.
Lady Camelia teaLocated inside of Macaron Bee, the space was adorable and very cozy. We caught up over steaming pots of tea and assorted snacks.

Lady Camellia macaronsThis was such a fun way to get in some girl time, and overall very affordable and customizable.
After tea we went shopping in Georgetown for a few hours and later on had dinner at Casa Luca (more on that soon) and then went to see Glass Menagerie at Ford’s Theatre.
It was my first time seeing a play at the gorgeous, iconic theatre and I loved every minute of it. I wish I’d been able to snap a few photos, but we were running behind and of course no phones allowed during the show. I hope to go back and see more productions there – the sound quality in the room was incredible.
We were all completely worn out by the end of the day, but it was a perfect way to send off another successful month. I’ve been worried about things back home, so it was nice to get out for a while because I tend to dwell on my worries a bit too much at times. My grandma, one of my sweetest people on the planet, has been having a difficult time with her health. It’s so hard to be away from home during times like these, but my heart is always there with the people I love. I’m hoping to make a trip out there in the next couple of months to give everyone a good squeeze.
Here’s to a happy and healthy February!
And please, feel free to share your January with me in the comments. This is a two-sided conversation, always!

Ford’s theater really is amazing! Also, please don’t tell me 30 is old…I turn 29 this year and don’t want to dread the next!

It’s not old at all, I swear! I think people just like to try to scare us into thinking it’s worse than it is 😉

Such a fun month for you guys, I love that the winery is doing so well and you are able to watch them grow with little doog by your sides! Also this made me want to go have a fancy tea party, but instead, I’ll make a cup and sip it at my desk and think of you fondly. xoxo
