Pineapple and Pearls, the new cafe-by-day fine-dining-by-night concept by Aaron Silverman, opened its doors this weekend to the delight of many Rose’s Luxury fans.
For now, they are only offering takeout coffee, sweet rolls and a few sandwiches with dinner service to follow sometime in April. We stopped by Saturday morning on our way to out to pour wines in Virginia for the day. There was a healthy bustle in the small storefront, but operations ran pretty smoothly for opening weekend.
We needed plenty of caffeine and sustenance to keep us warm in the frigid temperatures, so I ordered two lattes, two egg hash sandwiches on masa bread with salsa verde and a pineapple and pearls sweet roll (for later).
The latte art was more than on point, though sadly I had to cover it up with a to-go lid. It was served at the perfect temperature for drinking, but I would have preferred it piping hot since the cold weather caused it to quickly cool to lukewarm by the time I settled into the car.
Pineapple and Pearls is bringing a lot of style to the “fast food” game with its bright, airy interior and elegant takeaway containers. I wouldn’t have expected anything less.
I wasn’t able to do much food photography en route to our destination, but I have to tell you about that masa bread egg sandwich. Mainly that it was the most interesting breakfast sandwich I’ve ever had. The egg hash is flavorful and delicious, but the star of the show is the creative masa bread (the stuff used to make tamales). I’ve never had anything like it, and although the sandwich too could have been served hotter, I scarfed it down with glee.
It’s far from your light and healthy breakfast, but served as the perfect stick-t0-my-ribs meal for a busy and very cold day at the winery. (Did I mention it was cold this weekend?)
We didn’t get a chance to eat our pineapple and pearls sweet roll until later in the afternoon, when we halved it and shoved it into our faces as quickly as possible. The roll was dense and perfectly sweet. I can’t wait to try the other varieties (current offerings include Mexican hot chocolate and cinnamon, there was also a special brisket roll being offered during my visit).
Prices are a little high compared to your usual coffee shop fare, but they seem justified by the high quality ingredients, environmentally conscious packaging and general deliciousness – not to mention the pedigree of the guy behind the scenes.
I look forward to seeing how things at Pineapple and Pearls evolve over time. It’s safe to say I will be back, many times.
This sounds like my kind of coffee shop. And that masa bread…I want!
Sounds silly, but one of things I’m most excited about is moving to Chicago and discovering new coffee shops! 🙂
That’s not silly at all! At least not to me 😉 I get so excited to find a new one. The masa bread was excellent, as was the coffee. I can’t wait to go back!
