It has rained for seventeen straight days in DC during which time I’ve been in the midst of a terrific bout of insomnia. Needless to say, I’ve been mainlining caffeine like it’s my job lately. Lucky for me, there’s a new coffee slinger in town, right down the street from my apartment. Philz Coffee at The Yards opened this morning, and we joined the rest of the neighborhood in giving them a warm welcome.
The San Francisco-based chain celebrated the opening of its second DC location by giving away free coffee and pastries. Free coffee? You don’t have to tell me twice.
Lines were fairly long, but as we inched toward the coffee counter we were offered a steady stream of tempting pastries including scones, muffins, biscuits, croissants, brownies and cookies.
Up until now there wasn’t a great place to load up on baked goods in Navy Yard, so I’m pretty pumped to have such easy access to those brownies.
The space is cute and cozy with a decent amount of seating, perfect for taking advantage of the free wi-fi (another thing we’ve needed more of in the area).
Customer service was excellent, even during a busy opening day. Before today I wasn’t really familiar with the Philz Coffee schtick, but a coffee “artist” was happy to help us navigate the menu and choose our drinks. I was craving something along the lines of an iced latte, so she suggested I try the Tesora medium blend, light sweet (not sure what that means, something to do with the amount of milk and sugar).
Philz Coffee is brewed one cup at a time using the pour-over method. I’m usually an espresso gal but all coffee is good in my eyes and this was surprisingly delicious. I’m pretty excited about the new addition to the neighborhood!
Have you had Philz Coffee? What’s your order?
