New England Road Trip: Connecticut

Connecticut· Washington DCPosted by Kacy

10 Aug

Our days on the road were coming to an end, but we still had time for one more adventure. After delicious coffees and pastries at Bolt Coffee at our hotel, we got back in the car for the final leg of our trip.
I knew I wanted to make a stop in Connecticut, but it took me awhile to decide on a specific destination. I’d had grand plans to visit Washington Depot, the town cited as the inspiration for Gilmore Girls’ Stars Hollow, on our way home from Providence. Sadly, it was just too far out of the way. So we went with the next best thing, New Haven, home of Yale and Rory’s collegiate life.
New Haven ConnecticutHartford was also considered, but New Haven won in the end partly in thanks to the Cedarhurst Cafe.
Cedarhurst Cafe New HavenAfter a week of indulgent meals, I was craving healthy, wholesome food and this cafe definitely delivered on those fronts.
Cedarhurst Cafe breakfastAvocado toast on thick, seedy bread and a perfectly fried egg along with a tasty green juice were the perfect combination to get back on track.
Cedarhurst Cafe avocado toastCedarhurst Cafe is your quintessential college town coffee shop, but with a laid back vibe and incredibly friendly staff. They even allowed Ashton inside the restaurant and gave him copious treats as we perused the menu.
Cedarhurst CafeIn all honesty, we were pretty eager to get home by this point, so we didn’t stick around New Haven for too long. We did take a walk around to see a few of the sites.

walking in New HavenGetting out and walking around during each stop during our road trip was key for our health and our sanity and we were lucky to have clear skies and good (albeit hot) weather the entire trip so we didn’t have to resort to eating at a drive through with the dog. While I wouldn’t say we were healthy on this trip, incorporating healthy habits like this made me feel a lot more human by the time we finally arrived back home.
And with that, our road trip was over. We somehow made it all the way to DC from New Haven without even a bathroom break and then had to hit the ground running unpacking, doing laundry and catching up on email before heading back to work the next morning. And it only took me a month and change after returning to recap the whole thing!
I absolutely love a good road trip and I have to say this was one of the most memorable I’ve had yet (except for maybe this one). New England is a special place, and after getting acquainted with several of its beautiful cities I can’t help but want to do it all over again and see even more of this gorgeous part of the U.S.

I am really impressed by the beauty that New England has to offer. Until now, it was never on my list of places in the United States that I cared to see. But, now I have to reconsider this as possible roadtrip in the future. Maybe base it around a trip around Boston and go from there. Rhode Island, in particular, seems rather interesting, especially Newport.

Rhode Island is gorgeous! Boston is definitely the best jumping off point I’d say. I loved the entire region, but I can see returning to RI first above the others seeing as how it’s closer to DC and I just felt something resonate about the area.
