When we’re not out stuffing our faces at our favorite DC restaurants, we like to keep it healthy by cooking nutritious meals at home. I alternate between meal planning by myself and occasionally ordering grocery boxes like Blue Apron and Hello Fresh if we’ve had a busy weekend.
However, we all know there are those days when cooking just isn’t in the cards, let alone schlepping to the market for ingredients and cleaning up after. DC has a host of delivery options for a quick meal on a lazy night, but it’s hard to find something wholesome and healthy amid all of the offerings for pizza, burgers and sandwiches.
Mezze Box DC is a nice change of pace, a meal delivery service that uses fresh, whole ingredients drawn from the Mediterranean diet – whole grains and flat breads, fresh vegetables, healthy oils and fragrant spices.
We recently had the opportunity to sample some of their delicious offerings, and I was instantly impressed. The menu changes weekly, but always has options for both vegetarian and meaty mains and a variety of tasty sides.
We chose to try a rice and lentil salad and stewed okra as our mains, with pita bread and hummus on the side. Everything was full of flavor and really tasted homemade instead of sent through an assembly line and thrown into a paper bag.
Most of the dishes can be enjoyed both hot and cold, which makes them great for picnics or on-the-go meals as well. They’re also really easy to stretch into multiple meals, making it very affordable. Tom and I both got a dinner and a lunch out of our Mezze Box delivery. Our mains were loaded with fiber and nutrients, so we got full without gorging ourselves. And that hummus? You’re going to want some of it in your fridge at all times, trust me.
What was especially great about ordering from Mezze Box was getting a personal delivery from founder and chef Johnny Seikaly, which was such a cool personal touch. According to the website:
Johnny Seikaly grew up between Lebanon and the United States, eating some of the best food in the world out of his mother’s kitchen. After starting a family of his own, he set out to preserve his family’s traditional recipes so that his kids could enjoy the same comfort foods he grew up with. He sought out the great family cooks to learn the recipes and techniques, and he is now happy to pass on the family secret to you: by eating well, one lives well and finds happiness.
I love that mantra at the end, and I love Chef Seikaly’s passion for food and family. Supporting local DC businesses is a big passion of mine here at Bad Sentences, and to pass along this happy and healthy discovery I’m offering you guys a discount on your Mezze Box DC order. Just enter the promo code BADSENTENCES at checkout to receive 10% off your delivery! Eat and live well, my friends!

Mezze Box DC generously offered me a complimentary delivery in exchange for my review, but as always all opinions are my own.
