From DC to OKC and Beyond: Join Us on The Tasty Escape

Oklahoma City· Our Tasty EscapesPosted by Kacy

8 Mar

Hi everyone and welcome to The Tasty Escape! We’re Tom and Kacy and we’ve created this site as a way to inspire ourselves and others to make every day a delicious adventure. You may know us from our former blog, Bad Sentences. We had such a blast writing on that space the past four years, but felt it was time for something a little bigger and better, plus we were looking for a name that is a better fit for what we are all about – food and travel. Creating The Tasty Escape has been a labor of love for us and we can’t wait to share the journey with you!

Goodbye DC, Hello OKC!

The Big FriendlyIn addition to a change in URL, we’ve also recently had a literal change of address. After living in Washington DC for six wonderful years, we moved to Oklahoma City. I spent the first 25 years of my life in Oklahoma, but it’s Tom’s first time living the Okie lifestyle. We’ve been here about three weeks and are having so much fun exploring the city and reconnecting with friends and family. Oklahoma City will be a big focus on The Tasty Escape as we delve even more deeply into our new home and see what kind of trouble we can get ourselves into.

There’s so much we’re excited to share in the coming weeks, including recent trips to St. Michaels and Daytona Beach along with some of our favorite recent food adventures. Until then, I thought we’d dig into a few of the things we’re loving about Oklahoma City so far.

Urban Living Without Breaking the Bank

OKC balcony viewLogistically, we moved to OKC to be closer to my family and for a more manageable cost of living, which will hopefully enable us to travel more in the future. But we wouldn’t have done it if we didn’t think we could make a fun and happy life here. As far as that goes, we’re off to a fantastic start.

Our new apartment is right in the heart of Midtown, and it’s a really fun area. The city is bustling right now with new restaurants and bars open all over. The great thing about Oklahoma City is that you can live the urban lifestyle we love so much and experience everything it has to offer in an affordable way.

Apartment hunting was a lot less stressful than we’ve become accustomed to in DC, one of the most expensive housing markets in the country. We live within walking distance of so many fun restaurants, bars, museums, music venues and more (including two dog-friendly breweries – whatttt!??!?!). We’ve only scratched the surface of everything we want to see and do, but if this sampling is any indication of what’s in store, it’s destined to be an awesome year.

Tex Mex Feasting

Tex Mex in OKCTex Mex in DC just doesn’t live up to the deliciousness that abounds in Oklahoma (sorry DC, we love you but you know it’s true). We’ve been taking full advantage of it here by eating all of the tacos, chips and queso, and enchiladas we can get our hands on. We’ve spent a lot of time at Iguana Mexican Grill, which is super close to our apartment and has an enclosed, dog-friendly patio. But the options for good Mexican food and tacos in OKC is endless (um, Torchy’s anyone?). We can’t wait to try it all!

OKC Craft Breweries

OKC Beer Tasting

Ashton in full boss-mode pose.

While wine is and will always be my first boozy love, Oklahoma City’s craft beer scene is so on point it would be crazy not to imbibe. My brother and sister-in-law took me on an OKC brewery tour a couple of weeks ago, and I was so impressed by what we tasted. We’ll be writing in-depth about some of our favorites in the coming weeks – stay tuned!

Evening Walks Downtown

Bricktown river walkI lived in downtown OKC back in 2008, and one of my fondest memories is going on long walks after work with my roommate. Tom and I have taken that habit back up, hitting the streets most evenings to wander the neighborhood. I can’t believe how much it’s changed in the past ten years.

Bricktown OKC Street ArtThere are colorful murals everywhere and so many more dining options than we had back then. As much as it’s changed already, there are even bigger plans in the works from a new streetcar system to a sprawling urban park to a two-story food hall. I can’t wait to watch it all unfold.

We hope you’ll stick around and follow along as we turn every day into The Tasty Escape!
