I love all things Southern food. From fried chicken to collard greens to – my all-time favorite – banana pudding. But there’s something extra special about a Southern breakfast. When searching for where to get our Southern food fix in Asheville, one place came up over and over again. Biscuit Head offers “a fresh take on Southern cooking” combining traditional foods of the South with flavors husband-and-wife-team Jason and Carolyn discover on their many travels. The result is a loyal following, and a line around the block for those looking to “put some South in their mouth”.Biscuits and multiple varieties of gravy are the main event, but you’ll find pretty much every other Southern delicacy your heart could desire on the tempting menu. There’s also a free butter and jam bar with flavors ranging from sriracha to mango. It’s pretty magical.
Staying true to ourselves, we ordered way too much food. At least we went hiking beforehand? We started out with bloody marys and a gravy flight. Let’s go ahead and add “gravy flight” to the list of things you never knew you needed, but absolutely do.
Each flight comes with a huge, crispy-on-the-outside fluffy-on-the-inside biscuit and a choice of three gravies. There are six to choose from, plus a daily special. We opted for fried chicken gravy, sweet potato coconut and the special of the day, which was something decadent with bacon in it. All three were delicious, but the sweet potato coconut gravy surprised us as the clear favorite. The creamy texture and coconut curry flavor were an excellent contrast to the traditional Southern biscuit. I wanted to dip everything else on the table in it – and did.
While we could easily have made a meal on the gravy flight alone, we had loftier goals in mind. As soon as I saw fried green tomatoes as a side option, my order became crystal clear. The full breakfast comes with a biscuit, two eggs any style (poached for me) and a choice of two sides (fried green tomato and grits). This was so much food, but so much goodness.
The fried green tomatoes blew me away, hands down some of the best I’ve ever had. The breading was crispy, but not too thick and never got soggy. The tomatoes themselves were tender and juicy, picking up a little black pepper flavor from the breading. Dipping them in the sweet potato coconut gravy is highly encouraged. The grits and eggs were a little more standard, but rounded out the meal nicely.
Tom had a more difficult time deciding what to order, but ultimately settled on the mimosa fried chicken biscuit. Why is it called mimosa fried chicken? Because it’s brined in orange juice and champagne, of course.
The thick cut of juicy chicken is topped with sriracha slaw, sweet potato butter and a poached egg for the perfect blend of sweet and savory.
With food this good, I’m kind of glad I don’t live closer to a Biscuit Head lest I turn into one. If you’re ever in the area, this is definitely a must-visit.
There are two locations in Asheville and another in Greenville. Check out their website for more information.
Biscuit Head was not only one of my favorite meals in Asheville but one of my favorite breakfast meals EVER 🙂 I regretted not getting an extra biscuit just to try all the jam & honey options. This post just gave me a craving for sure. I have thought about getting their cookbook and trying to recreate some of the biscuit magic at home.
Oh my gosh it was so good! And I agree, I wish I’d tried more of the jam, honeys and butters!
I just went there and …omg…it was amazing. I am frantically searching for how to make the sweet potatoe curry gravy. They were also playing my favorite music Stick Figure. Hands down best stop in Asheville.
