I believe in second chances. A few years ago, we had brunch at Beuchert’s Saloon in Eastern Market. We loved the no frills atmosphere and the farm-to-table aspect of the menu, but were sadly disappointed in the food. Much of what we ordered was overly charred or overly greasy and generally unimpressive. Since then, we’ve returned a few times for drinks and snacks to a much better effect. Service is always friendly and attentive and the small bites we ordered were delicious. When friends suggested Beuchert’s for brunch last weekend, I was ready to give it another shot.
We’d already gotten our caffeine fix at Philz Coffee so we opted instead to share an affordable bottle of rosé, the brunch drink of choice for the fabulous ladies with which I dined.
We started with a couple of shared appetizers. First, the Beets by Drew with brown butter emulsion, honey, shaved criminis, beet chips, arugula and hazelnuts.
This is a next level beet salad, sweet and vibrant with a fun crisp from the beet chips and hazelnuts. The brown butter emulsion set everything over the top with a delicate richness that sang when combined with the fresh, tender beets.
Up next, a dish I’ve had before, the East Oaks Deviled Egg plate with radish slaw, cornichon and toasted shallots.
Vinegar lovers will delight in this tangy dish, overflowing with crisp slaw and pickles and perfect deviled eggs, just the way grandma made them. There was ample politicking for who would get the fourth egg. In the end, we split it into thirds. Sharing is caring.
For our entrées, we all chose to keep it classic. I had the Beuchert’s Breakfast with bacon, two eggs over easy, toast and grits.
Simplicity at its finest. Everything was cooked exactly right, adding up to one delicious diner-style breakfast. Runny egg yolks and grits are so hot together.
Lauren and Sarah both opted for the omelette with sautéed spinach, roasted mushrooms, oak shade cheddar and a green salad on the side.
They reported it to be fresh, light and fluffy and exactly what they’d been craving.
This was such a nice change compared to our first brunch experience at Beuchert’s Saloon. Instead of heavy and overly greasy food, everything we tried was light, fresh and simple – proof that everyone deserves a second chance. In fact, this may be my new favorite brunch in the Capitol Hill area, affordable with good food and friendly service.
We haven’t been yet, but I always love giving a place another chance, which is why we save negative reviews after two visits. Ya never know 🙂 Great photos!
